Staying energy efficient in the winter

One of the best ways to save money in the Winter is to make sure your boiler is energy efficient. Here are a few quick tips and tricks.

Energy efficient boilers

One of the best ways to save money in the Winter is to make sure your boiler is energy efficient. One of the best ways to check this your self is to see if its condensing. It will have a plastic pipe coming from the underside, usually white and this will terminate to a drain either inside or outside the property. If unsure get a Gas Safe engineer to check for you. If your boiler is not condensing it might be worth considering a more modern boiler as the gas savings can sometimes out weigh the actual cost of the boiler over time.

Draughts

If it feels like you’re struggling to keep heat in your home, you may want to look if you have a draught issue.

Best place to check are around windows, doors or floors that could be letting any cold air in. You can use a sealant, insulating strips and any type of beading to help stop any draughts.

Double-glazed windows are great for keeping the heat in during the winter & trapping the cool air during the summer. If your household has windows that aren’t double-glazed, then closing the blinds or curtains should help to retain heat.

Smart thermostats

Using a smart thermostat is a great modern way to save energy.

Smart thermostats are used to track your energy usage and can even create a heating schedule that is best suited for you & your home. Using a mobile phone, you can increase the temperature of your heating before you arrive home but remember to avoid completely turning your heating off when not at home as the energy used to heat your home from no heating is a lot more than simply maintaining a temperature.

Turn the thermostat down

To save energy your thermostat should be set to around 18°C, as this is a comfortable temperature for those who are healthy, active and under 65. Just remember that reducing your room temperature by just 1°C could help cut your heating bills by up to 10%.

To help save even more energy you can turn your boiler's max temperature to 60°C, this causes your boiler to go into an economy mode and heat water to 60°C instead of a higher temperature. Your hot water will now be a very warm temperature instead of boiling hot - a small price to pay for lower energy bills.

Boiler serviced

Having your boiler serviced annually helps to make sure your boiler is happy, healthy and running efficiently as possible.

During a service, your Gas Safe Registered engineer will point out if there are any issues with your boiler. If there are, they'll be picked up much sooner and can be replaced or repaired before a massive break happens.
